You need SSL to activate the "Secure" indicator
Earlier this year Google rolled out new security warnings for websites still being served via HTTP. Now in Chrome - and soon in the other major web browsers - an insecure connection activates a Google Security Warning that says "Not Secure" in the address bar, beside the URL.
However, sites that installed SSL certificates and migrated to HTTPS get a reward. When Google senses a secure connection, it displays "Secure" in the address bar, helping you build trust with your visitors.
Encryption is Mandatory
You'll need to install an SSL certificate. SSL can be purchased quickly and easily, and installation only requires a few command lines on your server. From there, just use 301 redirects to serve your site over HTTPS and your site will say "Secure" in your customers' address bars.
Note: We also recommend enabling HSTS, for more, click here.
Google has long been pushing for universal encryption, and 2018 is the year that it's really turning up the heat on site owners. At the beginning of last year Google began adding "Not Secure" warnings to web pages with insecure password fields. Recently, Google has expanded the security warning to any HTTP page that contains any kind of text field. Soon, every HTTP site will be marked "Not Secure."
Google is attempting to educate its users about connection security by creating a new binary. A website either has SSL installed and is "Secure" or it doesn't, in which case it's "Not Secure." You don't want to be on the wrong end of this equation. Act now and get ahead of the negative security warnings.
